![]() Runner on second at start of extra innings should be permanent for only regular season. It also fun figuring out decisions on whether to keep a pitcher in or find a pinch hitter when it comes to NL ball games later in the ball game. They also need to welcome 2-way players to do both in certain amount of games. If baseball wants to grow they will need different leagues playing or not playing a DH. I don’t want a 2-way to only pitch or to only hit (and possibly not field) when they play. I want those players to still play a position if they’re batting and also bat while pitch assuming they play in the NL ballpark. I personally believe that we will see more 2-way baseball players in terms of doing both batting and pitching. I believe they should not have universal DH. Moving forward, baseball has a tough decision to make. Could the Nats win back2back? MLB missed out on that and missed out having a stronger postseason than what is presented. Bryce Harper would have attention (possibly more given how his old team won the WS after he departed). Mike Trout in the postseason would bring attention just like Ovechkin from the Capitals brought so a high number of viewers when he was in pursuit of his 1st Stanley Cup. MLB needs as much headlines/storylines they could get. Focused on 2020 alone, the MLB has to be very mad that the Phillies, Angels, Nats, and/or the Mets didn’t make it. I mentioned how losing the Cubs is devastating for MLB and FOX Sports and that is because of the 16 team postseason because in any other year they’re facing the Braves in the NLDS. I said on another post that I hope the MLB doesn’t make the 16 team postseason permanent. I said on another post that having a 16 team postseason is enough for this season given the circumstance. But the Yankees themselves is enough to lead headlines in the World Series regardless the opponent. If it’s the Marlins their addition storyline is… Jeter has to root against the Yankees? Okay, the Marlins can only be a draw if they compete, but not dominate. If it’s the Padres, the MLB could highly market Fernando Tatis and hope he can be their Mahomes, Luka, and/or Zion going forward. Considering how bad the Hawks is and how the Falcons is no longer SB contenders, citizens from Atlanta and the state of Georgia (along with Mississippi, Alabama, North Florida, Tennessee, and the Carolinas) will ride behind the Bravos. If it’s the Braves, at least they’re a familiar team to be reckoned in America, especially from the older audiences. If it’s the Dodgers, the Dodgers will bring their WS drought storyline and also overcoming the 2017 WS (given what happened) storyline. So having the Yankees attempt to win their first WS in 11 years could be the best storyline to put out there. ![]() COVID erased all of that and let the Astros off the hook. That was going to be an all year affair whereas the Yankees haters don’t want them to win a World Series or dominate the MLB over a period of time. It’s hard to recall a specific Yankees team that was hated so much as what was transpired to be for the 2020 Houston Astros team. I’m talking on the level of Bad Boys Pistons, Laettner’s Duke, 2010-11 Heat, and 2014 Florida St football. Prior to the outbreak, it looked like the Astros were primed to become a team villain. What is great however is that the Astros is a participant, but only if they face the Dodgers could that be a great alternate hope for FOX. ![]() They could careless about their opponent. FOX wants the Yankees in the World Series. It’s been very odd on an even numerical year and I’m going to be odd on this post by getting to the point of what FOX wants its World Series to be and then talk about everything else. In Lake Erie, for example, low oxygen has contributed to fish die-offs. ![]() Longer periods when the lake is not mixing can exacerbate low-oxygen conditions. Thermal change can mix up the food web and lead to the proliferation of invasive species. The report lays out some examples of what's happened in other large lakes. "All of that's happening at the same time." "And the other thing you have to remember is this is not the only thing going on," Stow said, noting changes spurred by invasive zebra and quagga mussels. If the lake changes to warm monomictic, mixing once a year, Stow said it would signal fundamental change. "They evolved over thousands of years to take advantage of those systems that mixed twice a year." "The organisms that live there, the plankton and the fish, are used to the lake the way it was," Stow said. With warmer surface temperatures, the fall mixing cycle is starting later, leading to a shortened cooling period for deep waters and a longer summer period without mixing. Lake Michigan is dimictic, meaning there's a top-to-bottom mix of the water column twice a year. Records dating back to 1973 show maximum ice coverage across the Great Lakes is declining 5% per decade Lake Michigan's ice coverage decline is about 3.6%. Some of the most pronounced jumps in winter temperatures are occurring near the Great Lakes. The water's warming winters reflect rising surface temperatures and prolonged summers. "They're not obscured by the noise that might occur from a couple very warm or a couple very cold years." "What we can see from this data is a reflection of larger scale and longer-term processes," Stow said. Lakes can serve as "climate change sentinels," the study says, and deep water measurements can be particularly important because they provide a "climate memory." "It could have been that we'd only see an effect down in the first 30 or 40 meters," Stow said. Warming so far below the surface wasn't necessarily a surprise, Stow said, but it's hard to know what's happening without data. In deeper water, warming is estimated to be as much as. The study, published in Nature Communications, notes that Lake Michigan is "likely the world's only large lake with this type of long-term observations of water temperatures at depth." NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory scientists looked at 30 years of measurements, some hourly, to track seasonal patterns far below the surface. ![]() So starting in 1990, researchers turned to a string of thermometers floating vertically in southern Lake Michigan to gather measurements. Deep water understandings had previously relied on translating surface data or limited observations. Lake Michigan surface temperatures are estimated to be warming at a rate of as much as a third to a fourth of a degree Celsius per decade.īut the story of what's going on as far as 460 feet below the surface is sparse. "We've known for a while now based on surface temperatures-not just in Lake Michigan but smaller lakes and large lakes worldwide-that the surface temperatures seem to be increasing," Stow said. Some of the surfaces of the world's largest lakes are warming faster than ocean and air temperatures. The overall warming, ice loss and shrinking winters could lead to long-term shifts, altering the lake's food web and sending fisheries toward uncharted territory. The first-of-its-kind look at deep water warming fills in another gap in climate change research, revealing what's happening below Lake Michigan's surface. And if we don't monitor for them we run the risk of being caught by surprise." "But when they change fast it means humans have to adapt to the changes that occur. The lakes have been changing, ever since they were formed, Stow said. "These changes may seem very small, a couple tenths of a degree per decade, but this has been going on for several decades now, perhaps longer than is reflected in our monitoring," said Craig Stow, a NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory scientist and author of the study. It's been known that Lake Michigan surface temperatures are increasing and ice cover is lessening as human activity spurs climate change. ![]() The warming could change the seasonal patterns of the lake-and alter a way of life for ecosystems and industry alike.
